In-house movement — finished to museum standards.
Brand origin
Polish watchmaker Antoni Patek partnered with French inventor Adrien Philippe in 1851 in Geneva. Philippe had patented the keyless winding stem in 1842 — a breakthrough that eliminated the need for a separate key to wind a watch — and together they set out to build the most complicated timepieces in the world.
Heritage
Family-owned since 1932 (the Stern family), Patek Philippe is the most prestigious independent watch manufacturer in the world. It holds the auction records for most expensive wristwatch (Grandmaster Chime, CHF 31M, 2019) and continues to produce some of the most complicated timepieces ever made.

Collectibility & resale
Discontinued steel Nautilus and Aquanaut references trade at multiples of original retail. Vintage Calatrava and complicated pieces with original boxes, papers and Extract from the Archives are auction blue chips. Allocations from authorised dealers require long-term purchase relationships.
The 2020-2022 hype cycle pushed Nautilus 5711 prices to 5-6× retail; the correction of 2023-2024 trimmed this dramatically. Long-term, complicated Pateks have historically been the strongest store of value in modern watchmaking — but past performance is not a forecast.
Spotting the real thing
- —Movement finishing is the giveaway — Patek movements are decorated to the highest standard.
- —Always request the original Certificate of Origin and Extract from the Archives.
- —Service history through Patek's Geneva atelier or authorised service centres.
- —Never buy at a price too good to be true — Patek does not discount.
How to acquire
