I

Brand origin

François Goyard took over the Maison Morel trunk-making business on rue Saint-Honoré in 1853, renaming it after himself. His son Edmond invented the Goyardine canvas in 1892 — a painted chevron pattern that was waterproof, lightweight and instantly recognisable — and the house has remained family-owned ever since.

II

Heritage

Founded a year before Louis Vuitton, Goyard is privately held (Signoles family) and famously discreet — no e-commerce, no social media, no advertising. The Goyardine canvas, hand-painted with the chevron pattern since 1892, is still produced in the original Saint-Ouen atelier.

V

Collectibility & resale

Personalised pieces with painted initials are inherently one-of-a-kind. Vintage trunks (especially with provenance) command serious auction prices. Modern Goyardine totes resell strongly because of Goyard's deliberately limited distribution.

Limited distribution and no online sales create scarcity that supports resale prices — Saint Louis totes often sell pre-owned at or above retail. Personalisation is a value-add for the original owner; less so on resale.

VI

Spotting the real thing

  • Goyardine pattern is hand-painted — slight variation in chevron alignment is correct (machine-printed fakes are too perfect).
  • Serial number stamped on the leather tab.
  • Made in France stamp.
  • Leather is sturdy, full-grain, with a matte finish.
VII

How to acquire

Only available at Goyard boutiques and a handful of department-store concessions worldwide. No website, no online order. Personalisation typically takes 3-8 weeks.
