High jewellery — the Panthère motif since 1914.

I

Brand origin

Louis-François Cartier took over his master's workshop at 29 rue Montorgueil in 1847 after his employer's death. His son Alfred and grandsons Louis, Pierre and Jacques expanded the business, establishing the house as the jeweller to royalty by the early 20th century.

II

Heritage

Cartier crowned 27 European monarchs and invented the first modern men's wristwatch (the Santos) for aviator Alberto Santos-Dumont in 1904. The Trinity ring (1924) and Love bracelet (1969) are two of the most-imitated jewellery designs in history.

House codes

V

Collectibility & resale

Vintage Love bracelets (early Cipullo era), Tank Cintrée and Crash watches, and high-jewellery panthère pieces are auction blue chips. Modern Love and Juste un Clou pieces are largely lifestyle purchases, not investments — though gold weight gives them a floor.

Solid-gold Cartier carries metal value as a baseline. Rare vintage pieces with provenance can multiply at auction. Modern current-catalogue pieces typically resell at 50-70% of retail.

VI

Spotting the real thing

  • Serial numbers engraved cleanly — never stamped sloppily.
  • Hallmarks (gold purity, maker's mark) on the inside of rings and bracelets.
  • Love bracelet screws are real screws on authentic pieces (non-functional decoration on fakes).
  • Watch movements are signed and finished — see a Cartier-authorised watchmaker for verification.

How to acquire

Available at boutiques worldwide; bespoke and high-jewellery pieces require appointments. Vintage market is rich and well-documented.
